One thing that almost EVERY birthday party has in common is cake. No matter what the age or the theme, cake is necessary. However, I find that I like making cupcakes even better than a full sized cake for a few reasons. First off, they are the perfect portion size. Once the party has started, there is no need for the host or hostess to have to cut and serve a full sized cake. They are also a perfect size for the first birthday babe to devour. Another reason I love cupcakes, is because I love to create a cake-like appearance by placing the cupcakes in a shape and frosting them all together. Thirdly, I love to be able to frost one batch a few different ways to complete a theme. An example of this would be, for Jonah and Zoe’s 1st birthday party we did a wild animal theme. We made lion, zebra, and monkey cupcakes. Three different options without having to make multiple cakes.
You may have read about our Elmo and Cookie Monster cupcakes, Snowflake cupcakes, and Bandanna cupcakes. Below I have pictured some of the other cupcakes and cupcake “cakes” that we have made and loved.
Jonah and the Whale — Jonah’s 1st Birthday
made with mini cupcakes
A few years back, Becca made a turtle cake to celebrate Hosanna’s 2nd birthday.
Wild Animals Party — Zoe and Jonah’s 1st Birthday
The wild animal cupcakes used the following additions…
Monkey:
Chocolate Frosting
Buttercream frosting in a light brown color for the contrast
Junior mints for the ears
Lion:
Buttercream frosting in two shades of orange
Chocolate frosting for piping on the face
Cherrios for the ears
Zebra:
Buttercream frosting in black and white
Nilla wafer for the nose (it is easiest if you cut a horizontal slit in the cupcake just above the wrapper, to insert the nilla wafer in, then frost)
