Are you looking to find more friends? If so I have what you need… Friendship Bread! Okay, well it may not actually get you more friends, but it won’t hurt either! I first heard about friendship bread when my husband got it from a co-worker. He came home with a gallon sized bag of mush and a paper full of instructions. I will admit that I was skeptical. But after the bread had been baked, I was sold! It is a wonderful bread to eat and share!!
First I am going to give you the recipe to create your own starter. Then once you get this created you will be able to pass portions of it along to your friends. Then it is a 10 day process to create the right dough for more loaves. Jonah loves this because he knows that every day he has a special job. He loves to squeeze the bag, dump the ingredients, and of course eat the bread!!!
AMISH FRIENDSHIP BREAD
***It is very important to use plastic or wooden utensils and plastic or glass containers when making this. Do not use metal at all!***
Ingredients:
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup warm milk (110 degrees F)
1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup warm milk (110 degrees F)
Directions:
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water for about 10 minutes. Stir well. In a 2 quart glass or plastic container, combine 1 cup sifted flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly or the flour will get lumpy when you add the milk. Slowly stir in warm milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Loosely cover the mixture with a lid or plastic wrap. The mixture will get bubbly. Consider this Day 1 of the cycle, or the day you receive the starter. For the next 10 days handle starter according to the next set of instructions, multiplying when appropriate. After day 10, if you keep a starter for yourself you will be baking 2 loaves every 10 days. Or just ask one of your friends to return a starter to you when they are done!

Omgosh! Came across your post on These Chicks Cook linky party and I can’t believe I found someone else who has heard/made this bread! My co-worker brought this to me and I had NEVER heard of it. But I made the chocolate version (link below) and absolutely fell in love. There’s a big bag of the starter in my freezer as I type 🙂

I made this several years ago and we LOVE it! It freezes very well, so I usually kept a couple of the bags for myself to stock the freezer.

This bread is so ADDICTIVE!! I had some starter last year and kept making and making it. The only thing is getting enough friends to take the starter…so I ended up having to throw my last bit out and end the saga. I always wondered if there was a way to get my own starter when I wanted to get back on the band wagon again. Thanks for the recipe!
