I will be honest… at first I didn’t want to post this chocolate donut. Not because it lacked anything in texture or flavor but because it is a donut I would consider basic. There isn’t really anything special about it but, as Becca reminded me… “Sometimes you need a really good BASIC recipe.” So here it is, a really good basic chocolate donut recipe. Perfect for an easy morning breakfast and I can imagine it would be GREAT with some more specialized frosting.
Basic (Baked) Chocolate Donuts
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup FLOUR
- 2 Tablespoons COCOA POWDER
- 1 teaspoon BAKING POWDER
- 1/4 teaspoon BAKING SODA
- 1/3 cup SUGAR
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground NUTMEG
- 1/2 teaspoon SALT
- 2 Tablespoons unsalted BUTTER
- 1/4 cup BUTTERMILK
- 1/4 cup SOUR CREAM
- 1 teaspoon VANILLA
- 1 large EGG
- 1/4 cup MILK
- 2 cups POWDERED SUGAR
- 1 teaspoon VANILLA
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and baking soda, and then whisk in the sugar, nutmeg and salt.
- Add the butter, and using your fingers, rub it into the dry ingredients until it becomes coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, sour cream, vanilla and egg. Add to the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
- Pipe the dough into a lightly greased donut pan. Bake for 8 minutes until the doughnuts spring back when touched. Remove from oven and let cool.
- Mix powdered sugar, milk and vanilla. Dip the top of each donut into the glaze. ENJOY!! Makes 12 donuts.
