One of our annual holiday traditions is making holiday houses out of graham crackers and other sweet treats. My kids look forward to it every year. Today’s post is a quick how to make a graham cracker holiday house, so you can start a new tradition this year and make them with your kids and grandkids.
A few of my favorite tips –
Put the icing in baggies, snip off the bottom corner and you have a piping bag that easy to use and easy to clean up.
You can create these on any flat surface. In the past, we’ve wrapped pieces of cardboard with foil or wrapping paper. Paper plates also work well, especially with younger kids.
Put all of the decorating pieces in a muffin tin to keep them corralled and in one spot.
Choose a wide variety of dried fruits, cereals or candies to add interest and texture to your houses.
Be fairly generous with the icing, after all it is the glue that holds everything together.
When cutting the crackers to make the roof line, turn them over and cut them on the backside using a serrated knife.
Make it an event – invite a few other families to join you because the more the merrier.
how to make a graham cracker holiday house
step 1: grab Honey Maid Graham Crackers, each house will need at least 5 whole crackers and you want to have a few extra on hand in case of breakage
step 2: gather other ingredients – make royal icing, cereal, mints, dried fruits, yogurt covered dried cranberries, crackers, shredded coconut. cut 2 crackers to form the peaks of the house, this is most easily done on the back sides of the cracker using a serrated knife.
step 3: on a wrapped piece of cardboard, apply frosting in the shape of the house for the sides to stand in, also apply frosting to the edges of the walls to help them stick together. allow to stand a few minutes to set.
step 4: cut pieces of dried pineapple to form the doors and windows. use a piece of colored cereal for the door knob.
step 5: create the roof – use vanilla rice square cereal to make the shingles. add frosting and colored cereal to make the strands of lights. repeat on another cracker for the other side of the roof
step 6: attach roof, make light strand around the front edge of the house. make walkway with frosting, line with yogurt covered dried cranberries and small fish shaped crackers, make a snowman out of a circle mint and 2 yogurt covered cranberries, glue in yard. make a fence on the side of the yard using frosting and fish shaped crackers. sprinkle everything with a layer of shredded coconut to mimic snow
stand back and admire your masterpiece!
