Last month my family went to Walt Disney World on vacation…the trip itself was a little too exhausting to really be called a vacation, but the kids had a blast. One of my favorite parts of the trip was visiting Epcot’s World Showcase and seeing the different countries (and their food!) represented there. I enjoyed the food at Germany the most – my husband and I shared a fabulous reuben sandwich with a side of nudel gratin. Ohmygoodness…the nudel gratin was insanely delicious and I was looking forward to making it at home.
I had already decided to join Rachel and Brandy in their Mac & Cheese Mania, so I had the perfect reason to make it. What’s Mac & Cheese Mania? Read more at the bottom of this post.
My favorite part of this Nudel Gratin is the way the swiss cheese flavor comes through. I put mine in a small cast iron skillet to bake, but a small baking dish will do just fine. It’s the perfect decadent side dish for a steak, pork or poultry main dish. Feel free to double the recipe if you’re serving a larger crowd. You just can’t go wrong with mac & cheese!
This copycat Nudel Gratin from Disney's Epcot Biergarten Restaurant is simple to make and delicious to eat!
Ingredients
- 1 cup HEAVY CREAM
- 1 EGG
- 1/8 teaspoon SALT
- Dash of GROUND WHITE PEPPER
- Dash of FRESHLY GRATED NUTMEG (or ground nutmeg)
- 2 oz. SWISS CHEESE, shredded
- 2 oz. SHARP WHITE CHEDDAR, shredded
- 8 oz. ELBOW MACARONI
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a small baking dish.
- Cook macaroni about 7 minutes and drain.
- Stir together cream, eggs, salt, pepper and nutmeg in a medium bowl.
- In a small bowl, combine cheeses. Set aside 1/2 cup of cheese and add the remaining cheese to the cream mixture.
- As soon as the macaroni is done cooking and been drained, add it to the cream mixture and stir together right away.
- Pour into baking dish. Cover with foil.
- Bake 20 minutes. Remove foil, and sprinkle reserved cheese over top of noodles. Bake 10 minutes longer. Cool 5-10 minutes before cutting.
